  Fulham midfielder Junichi Inamoto
Junichi Inamoto has already set his heart on staying at Fulham and did his chances a power of good with a superb hat-trick which booked a UEFA Cup place for the first time in the club's history.

The Japan international is on a year's loan, having been rejected by Arsenal in the summer, with a view to a £3million move from Gamba Osaka.

After helping Fulham win the Intertoto Cup, Inamoto said: "I would like to stay here and am going to try my best to make my transfer a permanent one.

"The environment here is really good and I hope to stay longer."

Inamoto certainly has no hard feelings towards the Gunners and their manager Arsene Wenger.

He added: "If I bumped into Arsene I wouldn't need to say anything to him because I have already said thankyou.

"When you play with big players it is vital, and the experience I had there led to me scoring two goals in the World Cup and maybe my three goals tonight."

Fulham boss Jean Tigana tried to read the mind of Mohamed El Fayed by predicting that the chairman would also want Inamoto to stay.

Tigana said: "I think the chairman will

want to keep him, although I haven't spoken to him.

"I am very happy for Junichi. I wanted to sign him two years ago before he went to Arsenal because I knew him well.

"In a way he lost a year at Arsenal, but I am sure he progressed working under Arsene Wenger.

"It is difficult to play at Arsenal because they are a big team with a fantastic squad."

In a thrilling, fast-paced, end-to-end second leg of this Intertoto Cup final, Inamoto gave Fulham a dream start with a well-taken goal in the 12th minute.

He temporarily went from hero to villain as his sloppy defending allowed Bologna to equalise after 34 minutes.

But the 22-year-old, on his first start for Fulham, struck twice more in the first five minutes of the second half to secure a piece of football history for the Cottagers, playing of course at their temporary Loftus Road home.

Tigana added: "When I arrived two years ago nobody thought it was possible for us to play at this level. But this is the second step in my plans.

"The first was to play at a high level and the second was to play in a European cup competition.

"My target now is to go higher, but we need a bigger squad because it is going to be a long season.

"To play in the UEFA Cup for the first time in the club's history is fantastic and I am very happy."

Tigana again dismissed speculation about his own future.

"I keep my focus on the pitch because that is where I get my enjoyment," he said.

"I have had a good life and played at the highest level, and there are a lot of people who would like to have had my life."
