Fulham's Paul Peschisolido playing for Canada
in the FIFA Confederations Cup was unable to save the his side from a 3-0
defeat.
Two goals in a span of three minutes and another one late in the game gave
co-hosts Japan a 3-0 win over Canada in the first match for both teams.
Following a scoreless first half, Japanese midfielder Shinji Ono struck
on a well-executed free kick at the 56th minute to open the scoring. Just
three minutes later, Akinori Nishizawa lunged for a short cross from Hiroaki
Morishima and beat Canadian goalkeeper Craig Forrest from close range. With
two minutes left to play, Morishima took a pass from Ono and chipped over
Forrest for Japan’s third and final goal.
Canada played well in the first half, generating the better scoring opportunities.
Canada’s best chance came in the 30th minute, as David Xausa sent a
first time shot at goal that Japanese ‘keeper Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi
parried. Jim Brennan chipped the ball past Kawaguchi in the 34th minute
but Jason Bent could not convert the chance, and Jason DeVos saw a good
header deflected over the goal late in the first half.
Canada will face Brazil Saturday in Ibaraki in their second Group “B”
game. The game is live on Channel 5 here in the U.K. and with a bit of luck
we may see Peschi in action. |
