Mark Clattenburg (Tyne & Wear Co. Durham)
At the age of 30 he is by far the youngest referee in the Select Group of Officials. When he was 16 he was sent on a refereeing course as part of the Duke of Edinburgh awards and was immediately bitten by the refereeing bug.
Mark then started his refereeing career in 1990 and is the product of the fast tracking system that allows referees of a young age and ability to be rushed through the various levels of refereeing to enable them to reach the top of their profession a lot more quickly.
By 1999 he was promoted to the National List of Assistant Referees and was refereeing in the Conference. He only spent a year on that list before he was promoted once more to the National List of Referees meaning he was just one step away from the Premiership. So at the age of 25 years old he became the youngest referee to officiate in the Football League since 1956 when the legendary Jack Taylor blew his whistle. Taylor went on to referee the 1974 World Cup Final so Mark still has a lot to live up to.

Dejan Stefanovic was lucky not to be sent of in the fourth minute when he brought down Boa Morte as he prepared to charge through on goal, but referee Mark Clattenburg opted for leniency and showed only a yellow card.
