Franco Baresi will leave Fulham on wednesday morning after a three-month nightmare.

The Italian legend has agreed with club chairman Mohamed Fayed to end the doomed spell in London - and it will be announced on Wednesday morning.

Having already been demoted from director of football to an advisor, Baresi saw his three-year contract ripped up and put on a six-month trial instead.

That proved to be the final straw for Baresi, 42, and with his employers equally as dissatisfied, the two parties agreed late last night to sever their links.

On Baresi's arrival, having been AC Milan vice-president, supremo Fayed stated: "This is the next step in realising my dream of making Fulham one of the foremost clubs in the world."

Yet Tigana and Baresi endured a difficult working relationship from day one. The French chief was furious his rival was in charge of signing players.

Baresi's only significant contribution was buying Facundo Sava from Argentinian club Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata for £2million - and Tigana is desperate to sell him.

In fairness to Baresi, it is possible he was merely brought in as an insurance should Tigana fail at the start of the season.
