Baresi demoted to Advisor

last updated Friday 09th August 2002, 11:04 AM
JEAN TIGANA has won his power struggle with Franco Baresi at Fulham.

Italian legend Baresi has seen his three-year contract as director of football at the west London club ripped up.

Now the former AC Milan defender - who arrived in May - is on a six-month trial.

Fulham owner Mohamed Fayed brought in Baresi with the intention of making him Tigana's successor.

But Baresi has not made an impressive start and a huge question-mark hangs over his future with the club now playing their home games at QPR's Loftus Road.

Tigana eased some of the pressure on him by reaching the finals of the Intertoto Cup against Italians Bologna. A win will see them through to the first round of the UEFA Cup.

Baresi, 42, last month saw his title of director of football cut to merely an adviser.

He was brought in to oversee transfers. But, of the club's four summer arrivals, Baresi was only involved in signing Facundo Sava. Tigana is said to be unimpressed with the Argentine hitman and wants to sell him.
