Player description

Mark Crossley was snapped up by Fulham for an undisclosed fee as back-up to Edwin van der Sar following Maik Taylor's unwillingness to play understudy.

Birmingham had tried to sign Crossley in the summer but were put off by the asking price they then settled on Maik Taylor. In August the Welsh international signed a two-year deal with The Cottagers.

Crossley began his career with Nottingham Forest as a trainee way back in 1987, and he became a real Forest legend after almost 400 games for the club.

He actually had a brief spell on loan at Manchester United in 1990, although it was merely as back-up and he did not turn out for the Red Devils.

After falling out of favour at the City Ground, he joined Millwall on loan in February 1998, playing 14 games for the Second Division club.

Crossley was signed by Middlesbrough in the summer of 2000 as back-up for number one Mark Schwarzer, and he made his debut in a 3-1 win at Macclesfield Town. His first season was marred by a red card against Arsenal in the penultimate game.

He earned a run in the side in the 2001/02 campaign as Schwarzer underwent a hernia operation and won many plaudits for his performances - but as soon as the Australian was fit he was re-selected.

The Wales international, who has actually played for the England Under-21 side, signed a new contract in the summer of 2002. By then had played for Boro 29 times.

He went out on loan to First Division strugglers Stoke City at the end of November 2002, making his debut in a 1-1 draw at Gillingham. Unfortunately, he made a real howler - letting the ball through his hands to gift the opener to Paul Shaw.

Crossley spent just five days at the Britannia as an injury to Mark Schwarzer forced Boro to recall their player.

He returned to Stoke at the beginning of March 2003, making his debut in the 0-0 draw at Ipswich Town.

Following his transfer to Fulham Mark Crossley said “I’m delighted to be joining the Club. I’ve got connections with Chris and I know Dave Beasant really well so I’m looking forward to working with the squad,” said Crossley shortly after signing. “I know that I’m 34, but it will still be a good learning opportunity. I know Edwin’s a top class ‘keeper but hopefully I can put a bit of pressure on him and keep him on his toes.”
