  • Formed in 1884 Tranmere joined the Football League from the Central League in 1921.

  • Now in their tenth successive season in this division, having gained promotion from the old Div 3 (beat Bolton 1-0 in play-off final) in 1991.

  • Reached the play-offs for three successive seasons between 1993 and 1995.

  • Have never played top division football. Their best season ever came in season 1992-93 when they finished 4th in this division.

  • Tranmere enjoyed their most successful season ever in Cup competitions last season. Reached their first ever major Cup Final, in the Worthington Cup (lost 2-1 against Leicester and reached the last eight of the FA Cup (lost 3-2 against Newcastle). Their best ever runs in both Cup competitions.

  • Following Tranmere's 3-2 defeat at home to Barnsley on 17th March 2001 John Aldridge resigned as manager. He stated that he believed he had taken the club as far as he could.

  • Assistant manager Kevin Sheedy will take temporary charge, assisted by reserve team manager Ray Mathias, probably until the end of the season.
  • Aldridge's right-hand man for 3 years, Sheedy was given 11 games to preserve Tranmere's Division 1 status. Unfortunately he hasn't got off to the best of starts, going down 2-1 at Gillingham on 20th March 2001 and 2-1 to West Brom on Sunday.
  • Youth coach at Blackburn before moving to Tranmere to become reserve team boss in July 1996. Promoted to assistant manager a year later.
  • Began his playing career with Hereford before moving to Liverpool in 1978. Unable to gain a regular place in the side he moved to Everton in 1982.
  • At Everton he became part of the side that won the League Championship in 1985 and 1987, the FA Cup in 1984 and the Cup Winners Cup in 1985.
  • Moved to Newcastle in 1992 and helped Newcastle avoid relegation before finishing his playing career at Blackpool.
  • 275 League appearances in total, scoring 66 goals.
  • Former Eire International with 45 caps scoring 9 goals.
  • His assistant Ray Mathias first joined Tranmere in 1964 and holds the clubs all-time appearance record, 636 games in League and Cup.He had a brief spell as Tranmere manager in February 1985 when Bryan Hamilton was sacked but soon followed Hamilton to Wigan.Mathias took over as manager of Wigan in 1986 and led the club to promotion to the old Division 3 in 1987 and the Quarter-Finals of the FA Cup the same year. Mathias returned to Tranmere as reserve team manager in 1989 and then back to Wigan for a second spell as manager in 1998. Despite winning the Autoglass Trophy and getting Wigan into the Play-Offs Mathias was sacked and returned once more to Tranmere in the summer of 1999.

    Jean Tigana
  • Appointed Fulham manager on July 1 2000 (Fulham announced his arrival on April 9) last year.
  • Took over from Karl-Heinz Riedle who had been in temporary charge for the final 6 weeks of last season.
  • Riedle took over from Paul Bracewell, who was sacked on March 29 - just 10 months after his appointment (Fulham's play-off hopes had all but ended by this time).
  • Was wanted by the French FA to succeed Aime Jacquet as national coach after France 98.
  • By the time Tigana left Monaco Roger Lemerre had already been appointed. Tigana spent the next year treading grapes on his French vineyard and working as a players agent (maybe at the same time!).
  • Mohamed Al Fayed had originally wanted Eric Cantona as manager, but after failing to secure his services, he turned to Tigana after being recommended by Cantona.
  • Tigana has coached players such as Petit, Henry, Barthez and Thuram.
  • Tigana installed a strict training regime at the club, during the summer, players were working out as early as 6am in their training camp in France.
  • Tigana claims to have watched all 57 of Fulham's games last season on videotape.
  • As a player Tigana won the European Championship with France in 1984.
  • He won 52 French caps and played in two World Cup semi-finals.

Nickname: The Cottagers

  • Now in their second successive season in Div 1, having won the Div 2 title in 1999. They have not played top division football for 33 years, since they were relegated in 1967-68.
  • Last season Fulham finished 9th, 9 points off a play-off place and 24 points behind Champions Charlton. Last season was their first season in this division in 13 years, since they were relegated from the old Div 2 in season 1985-86.
  • Were in the top 10 for all of last season, but did not figure in the play-off positions in the 2nd half of the season.
  • This season Fulham are obviously looking for promotion, if they achieve this they would have won promotion from the bottom division to the top division in the space of five seasons, after finishing Div 3 runners-up in 1996-97 and then Div 2 Champions two season's ago.
  • Al Fayed bought a controlling interest in Fulham FC in May 1997, with an initial investment of £30m. Shortly after his take-over, he went on record as saying that he was looking for Fulham to be a Premiership club in 5 years time.
  • Al Fayed has spent £24.5m on 43 new players, since his arrival.
  • 45 players have left the club since Al Fayed's arrival this has recouped just over £4.5m.

  • The clubs first met in September 1938 at Prenton Park. Fulham won 1-0. Fulham also won the return match at Craven Cottage by the same score. Tranmere were relegated to the old Division 3 this season.
  • They did not face each other again until 1967 in the League Cup at Craven Cottage. Again, Fulham won 1-0.
  • Tranmere scored for the first time v Fulham in March 1970 as they gained a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage. One month later in April Tranmere beat Fulham 1-0 to gain their first win.
  • Tranmere failed to score in their first 3 games v Fulham and only scored twice in the first 7 games. However, in the last 8 games Tranmere have scored in all but 1 and scored twice in half these games.
  • The last time the sides met was this season in December 2000. Tranmere actually opened the scoring in the 7th minute through Jason Koumas but goals from Lee Clark in the 21st minute and 2 from Luis Boa Morte in the 28th and 50th minute gave Fulham a 3-1 win.

    Ian Hume
  • 17-year-old Canadian-born striker, now in his 2nd season as a professional.
  • Progressed through the club's youth ranks.

    Simon Osborn *29 year old midfielder signed from Wolves on a short term contract until the end of the season. *Began his career at Crystal Palace and also played for Reading and QPR before joining Wolves. *Made 259 career League appearances scoring 22 goals. *Made 24 appearances for Wolves this season scoring once at Fulham in the Worthington Cup in November. *Suffered a toe injury in January 2001 and then found himself surplus to requirements as Wolves signed new players and have youngsters coming through.
  • Made his debut for Tranmere starting and finishing at West Brom on Sunday.

    Andy Parkinson
  • 21 year old forward who joined Tranmere in August 1996 after completing his YTS apprenticeship with Liverpool.
  • Played alongside Michael Owen in Liverpool's 1995 FA Youth Cup winning team.
  • Now in his 5th season with Tranmere.
  • 44 appearances this season with 8 goals (3 in cups), incl. 2 in 3-2 Worthington Cup 3rd rnd win v Leeds at Prenton Park. He scored the winner in the last minute of extra time.
