Marcus Bettinelli earned Fulham a deserved replay - but the hosts had Jack Rodwell sent off on 65 minutes to make it a lot easier for Kit Symons' men.

Symons described his changed team as a 'a hungry young side', and they gave the boss second helpings after Rodwell was dismissed on 66 minutes for a second yellow card when he stupidly raised a hand as Bettinelli tried to clear.

The first yellow might have been the later red on a different day after the midfielder clattered into Kostas Staflydis in the first period, and Whites nearly nicked it in the last four minutes when Hugo Rodallega crashed a 20-yard strike against the post.

But it was Fulham's keeper twice denying new Black Cats striker Jermain Defoe that made a real difference.

The former QPR target attempted a right-foot volley from 10 yards that was saved brilliantly by Bettinelli at his near post to shove the ball around for a corner just past the hour. A couple of minutes later, the young custodian did it again to to stop a poke by Defoe from even closer in.

Seko Fofana was inches from putting Fulham ahead with a deflected shot six minutes into a second half that was in contrast to a tepid first 45 minutes.

Cauley Woodrow's effort was charged down, and a half-decent effort from Moussa Dembele still brought no real work for keeper Vito Mannone.

At the other end, Bettinelli used his feet at to deny Seb Larsson's low drive, but although the majority of the 22,000 crowd booed at the end, the 711 fans in white who made the 560-mile round-trip had much to shout about.
