Sunderland (0) 0-0 (0) Fulham

Sunderland and Fulham will have to do it all again Tuesday week in the capital after they ground out a goalless stalemate at the Stadium of Light.

Jermain Defoe was unable to mark his home debut with a goal as the Premier League Black Cats - who played the final 25 minutes with 10 men after Jack Rodwell was sent off for a second bookable offence - were frustrated by the Championship outfit.

Defoe was twice denied by Fulham stopper Marcus Bettinelli, who also made important saves from Seb Larsson, Patrick van Aanholt and sub Connor Wickham.

Fulham also went close on a couple of occasions, with sub Hugo Rodallega almost snatching a winner inside the last 10 minutes when he hit the post.

But these two sides must do battle again in a fourth round replay at Craven Cottage on Tuesday, February 3, for the right to take up a place in the last 16.

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet stuck with the 3-5-2 system he used in last weekend's league defeat at Spurs, but made three changes to the starting line-up.

With defender Wes Brown and midfielder Adam Johnson both ruled out with knocks, Sebastian Coates and Liam Bridcutt came into the side.

And the third change saw Vito Mannone make his first appearance since October, replacing Costel Pantilimon in goal.

New signing Defoe made his home debut, continuing his partnership with Steven Fletcher up front.

Fulham boss Kit Symons made four changes to the team that began the Londoners midweek 3-2 Championship win over Nottingham Forest.

In came Bryan Ruiz, Cauley Woodrow, Lasse Christensen and Moussa Dembele in place of Alex Kacaniklic, Rodallega, Ross McCormack and ex-Newcastle man Scott Parker, the latter missing out through injury.

Sunderland started on the front foot and pinned Fulham back in the early stages, but without fashioning a clear chance.

Shaun Hutchinson did well to clear just in front of Defoe inside the first five minutes when the frontman threatened to get on the end of van Aanholt's lobbed ball back across the face of goal after the Dutchman had recycled Billy Jones' original right-wing cross.

And Rodwell saw a long-range effort deflected over the bar shortly before the 20-minute mark.

Fulham began to settle into the game and when Sunderland failed to clear a corner, some neat footwork from Seko Fofana set up an opportunity for Woodrow but his shot on the turn from six yards out was blocked.

And it was Mannone who was called upon to make the first save of the game midway through the half, diving low to his right to push Dembele's 20-yard shot away to safety.

Rodwell was lucky to escape with only a yellow card for a rash challenge on Konstantinos Stafylidis on the half-hour, when some referees might have reached for a red.

A couple of minutes later, Seb Larsson's low shot from inside the area on the right forced Bettinelli to save with his feet, with the ball going out for a corner.

And from Larsson's flag-kick on the right, Santiago Vergini met the ball at the near post but could not steer his shot on target.

Early in the second half, the dangerous Fofana sent a shot across the face of goal that was deflected just wide of the far post.

Defoe worked a shooting chance for himself just before the hour, wriggling away from Bryan Ruiz on the left-hand touchline and then hitting a right-foot effort that flew wide of the right-hand post.

Defoe was inches away from opening his account in the 62nd minute when Jones reached the byline on the right and picked him out with a far post cross, but Bettinelli shovelled the striker's volley onto the left-hand post and out for a corner.

And Defoe was again denied by Bettinelli a couple of minutes later after Fletcher's scuffed shot fell to him inside the area and he stabbed it goalwards.

Rodwell's second booking came in the 66th minute when he stupidly impeded Bettinelli as the keeper tried to throw the ball out, leaving referee Anthony Taylor with no option but to send off the midfielder.

Bettinelli tipped a shot from van Aanholt over the bar, and Wickham was denied in similar fashion.

And at the other end, Rodallega smashed a low shot against the foot of the right-hand post with Mannone beaten.
