Sheri and Petit for Fulham

FULHAM believe they have pulled off a sensational transfer coup by landing Emmanuel Petit AND Teddy Sheringham for next season.

Chairman Mohammed Al Fayed is so confident of capturing the superstar duo that he has already prepared pounds 35,000-a-week deals for them.

Sheringham's move from Manchester United, where he was expected to sign a new deal, will be a free transfer but Petit will cost a cut-price pounds 1.5m.

The transfers depend on Jean Tigana leading his side to promotion. But the club are already laying down ambitious plans to build a team capable of challenging for honours at the highest level.

Petit, 30, has not settled at Barcelona since last summer's switch to the Nou Camp, where he has been used mainly in defence.

Despite some on-the-field problems, the World Cup winner enjoyed his time in London and is keen on a return to the capital.

Sheringham would also look favourably on a move south.

Only last week, he insisted that no new offer had been forthcoming from Old Trafford, even though his current deal expires in the summer.

And even if Manchester United do come up with fresh terms, Sheringham, 34, could well prefer to end his playing days in London, close to his son.

Al Fayed's spending spree will also take highly-rated Tranmere midfielder Jason Koumas to Craven Cottage. Koumas, 21, has become the First Division's most wanted player after a sparkling season.

The Wrexham-born player was a hot teenage prospect but suffered a dip in form. But now he is rated in the pounds 2.5million bracket and has attracted attention from several Premiership clubs - including Everton and Manchester City.

Fulham, though, are confident they will win the race and make Koumas part of their exciting plans for next season.
