Nationwide not so fair
Fairplay League

last updated Monday 06th November 2000, 11:12 AM

Fulham are now fourth in the Nationwide's Fairplay League.

Including the Huddersfield game they have committed some 136 fouls in 15 games and have been awarded 24 yellow cards and no red cards. So not only are Fulham playing good soccer they are playing some of the cleanest soccer in the division. Congratulations to Fulham and the coaching staff.

It would appear however that the authorities should be more interested in another issue namely why is it that Fulham are being punished far more severely by referees than teams such as Watford. The statistics show quite clearly that Fulham players are being given a yellow card for every 5.7 fouls while Watford players are yellow carded every 15 fouls. If this disparity were to continue for the whole of the season it would obviously mean that Fulham would suffer more suspensions than it's main rival and therefore find it more difficult to gain promotion.

Most fans claim at one time or another that their team is getting a bad deal from referees it seems that Fulham's fans could have a point.

If the authorities really want fair play on the pitch they should take the lead in ensuring fair play by referees as well as players.
