Mark Hughes was struggling to comprehend Fulham's 1-0 defeat at Liverpool on Wednesday night.

The Cottagers boss saw his team suffer their first defeat since 1st January as John Pantsil's 52nd minute own goal proved the decider in the clash at Anfield.

The Reds had threatened a rout in the opening stages of the match but the visitors responded valiantly and could have helped themselves to at least one goal had Moussa Dembele had his shooting boots on.

And Hughes lamented his side's failure to convert their chances as they remain 15th in the table, four points above the relegation zone.

The Welshman said "I've been here many times as a player and as a manager and I don't think I've been part of an away side that has come to Anfield and totally dominated the game.

"We're all scratching our heads in the dressing room wondering how we haven't got something out of the game as I'm sure the Liverpool players and management are scratching their heads wondering how they won the game.

"We've come here, given a good account of ourselves and come away with nothing but we know we're close (to winning away). We're a good side and we take games seriously irrespective of home or away or whoever they are.

"We need to take chances when they present themselves. We had opportunities tonight and unfortunately their goal came from a comedy of errors."

The loan signing of Chelsea forward Gael Kakuta will give Fulham something different in games to come.

The French youngster will stay at Craven Cottage for the rest of the season and Hughes is looking forward to utilising the French youngster.

The Cottagers boss added: "He's a young player, he's got ability and pace, which at times we lack, so he has a skill set that will enhance what we have already got."
