Fulham caretaker manager Kit Symons hopes Fulham's Capital One Cup drubbing by Derby doesn't give Shahid Khan a last-gasp change of heart.

Symons is nailed on for the job after transforming the club's fortunes during his spell as caretaker boss.

Fulham chief Khan is due to fly in on Wednesday night and is expected to confirm Symons' appointment on a permanent basis later this week.

And the former Fulham defender is keeping his fingers crossed that the 5-2 defeat doesn't count against him.

He said: "One result will not hamper my chances. I'm very hopeful it's getting closer and won't be far away. I understand the process that's in place."

Moussa Dembele's double had put the hosts in command before the Rams came storming back with five unanswered goals.

And Symons admits the second-half collapse was a learning curve for his young guns.

He added: "It was very disappointing. First half we were in the game and shaded it. We did dirty side of the game well and nullified them.

"Second half was a completely different story. We didn't track runners and became disjointed. It's a tough lesson for the young players."
