Fulham winger Damien Duff made a surprise return to the Fulham starting line-up on Sunday and looks certain to be available for the Republic of Ireland's World Cup play-off with France.

Duff was originally ruled out for the game at Wigan Athletic but on Saturday his manager Roy Hodgson hinted that he could become available.

The winger played the full game at the DW Stadium without any sign of trouble with the Achilles injury that had been causing him problems at the start of the week

The Republic play France home and away on the Saturday 14th Nov and Wednesday 18th Nov and Duff will almost certainly take a place in Giovanni Trapattoni's starting XI at Croke Park next Saturday.

Duff is expected to link up with the rest of his international colleagues on Tuesday for the build-up to Saturday's game at Croke Park.
