It was billed as a title decider, but in truth the match at Carshalton last night was more of a procession for Fulham. Their resounding defeat of Arsenal effectively ended the champions’ hopes of retaining their title.

Fulham will all but ensure victory in the National Division if they can defeat Leeds United on Sunday. They are unbeaten for the past two years and have dropped points only to Charlton Athletic this season. They are 13 points ahead of Arsenal, who have three games in hand.

“I am proud of the girls. It was nice to beat them by more than one goal,” Gaute Haugenes, the Fulham manager, said. “With three matches left, we will be trying our best.”

Arsenal’s chances of halting Fulham’s charge to the title became even slimmer when Rachel Yankey opened the scoring after seven minutes.

Forty-five minutes later, Margunn Haugenes rifled the ball in from close range for Fulham’s second goal when Arsenal failed to clear a corner. Fulham doubled their lead near the end of the game with an own goal by Leanne Champ and a second for Yankey, before Leanne Sanderson scored a late consolation goal.
