Fulham is being strongly linked in Italy to the Roma forward Vincenzo Montella. It is being reported that Giallorossi officials met at the trainiing centre in Trigoria to decide on the player's future with contact likely to be made with Fulham officials next week.

There will be a press conference at Trigoria this afternoon at 14.00 London time.

The Italian striker is keen to obtain regular football and is attracted by a possible switch to West London. His appearances have been limited in the last two seasons due to injuries, he underwent surgery on both his back and shoulder, and coach Luciano Spalletti seems to consider Montella as a reserve option.

Milan have also shown an interest in 'The Little Airplane' but his ineligibility in Europe counts against a move to the San Siro.

After being left out of the side that defeated Valencia 1-0 in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night, the writing looks on the wall for Montella's future at Roma.

The former Sampdoria star has been unable to convince coach Luciano Spalletti and Chris Coleman is reported to be leading the chase for his signature.

Montella began his club career in Serie C at Empoli F.C. in 1990 before moving to Serie B club Genoa in 1996, where he scored 21 goals in his only season with the club. He then moved up to Serie A for three seasons with U.C. Sampdoria. When Sampdoria were relegated in 1999, Montella moved to Roma in a €25m transfer, where he won a Scudetto in 2001.

Montella received his first international cap against Wales on 5 June 1999, and was part of the Italian national team at Euro 2000 and the 2002 World Cup.

Montella's nickname is L'Aeroplanino ("The Little Aeroplane"), in a reference to his short stature and trademark goal celebration.
