The Chris Martin saga took another twist on Sunday night as Derby sacked Steve McClaren.

The now departed Rams boss had been keen to recall the Scottish striker from his loan spell at Fulham in January.

McClaren and Whites boss Slavisa Jokanovic exchanged a war of words at the turn of the year over Martin's future.

"I've made it clear that I like Chris Martin and if there's any possibility that we can get him back, then that's great. We just have to wait and see," McClaren said on New Year's Eve.

"From day one I've made my feelings on Chrissy clear. It's now up to the two clubs to sort that one out and for us managers to stay out of.

"The (transfer) window isn't open yet. There is a lot of speculation and people don't know the full extent of what is about to happen."

Jokanovic fired back two days later after the Whites lost 2-1 to Brighton.

He fired back: “I've spoken to him. We played against Derby four weeks ago and Steve asked me about Chris Martin and he explained to me that he liked this player.

“I explained that he is under contract and I want to stay with him and I recommended him looking in the market for another option. He probably doesn't understand my English very well.”

Martin and Jokanovic appeared to reconcile before the game with Barnsley in January, where he scored.

The Serbian said at the time: “We resolved this situation inside the dressing room and he is 100 per cent committed with us.

“We believe in him. The team believe in him. The club believe in him.”

Martin spoke to GetWestLondon after the 1-0 defeat against Reading, towards the end of January, but refused to air his dirty laundry in public and focus on his football.

He said: “I just want to concentrate on football. I need to look after myself and my family. I believe I put them first throughout my career.

“In January, that's been the case. People know there have been discussions. I'm not going to air my dirty laundry in public.

“All I want to do is focus on my football. I want to get over the disappointment of Reading but all players want to get on the pitch and play 90 minutes and I'm fortunate enough that I've managed to do that the last few games.”

He signed a new contract at Derby but Jokanovic has previously said he wouldn’t be returning to his parent club during the January Transfer Window - with Martin returning to the Fulham line up.

However, the 28-year-old was absent from the Cottagers’ squad for their trip to South Wales, but his manager insists everything is normal and he expects him to play a big part in his side.

He said: "The situation is completely normal, he is working hard to try and improve himself and very soon I believe he will be at the optimal level to be a big part of the team and help us.

McClaren's departure may now impact Martin's future and Fulham still have an option to sign the striker on a permanent basis in the summer.
