Unlucky Ref for Fulham

last updated Friday 17th August 2007, 5:16 PM

Referee Lee Mason - LancashireReferee Lee Mason - Bolton, Lancashire
Mr Mason started refereeing in 1988 and was promoted to the national list of assistant referees in 1998 and then the Premier League list in 2000, plying his trade mainly in the northern half of the country.

He was promoted to The Football League list of referees in 2002, and was the 4th official at the 2004 Division 2 Play-Off final between Bristol City and Brighton and Hove Albion.

His first Premiership game was in February of 2006 and he has now managed a grand total of 16 Premiership games.

In the Football League he was critised by fans for inconsistency so he should fit in well in the Premiership.

Mr Mason has reffed Fulham four times so far and we are still to register a win. So he's lucky then.

Referee Stats - 2006/2007

Ref Mason is a fairly new boy on the block and seems to be easing himself into his new role with average or below average figures across the board.Early indications are that he will be a less frequent blower than his mates.

Ref Mason is a fairly rare ref in that he has given more yellows to home teams than away squads.

The first game for caretaker manager Lawrie Sanchez. He must have wondered what he had let himself in for.

03-03-2007 Premier Fulham 1-1 Aston Villa 2y 0r
Bookings: Carew, McCann (Aston Villa)
For Villa's goal Ref Mason accidentally blocked Alexey Smertin from reaching a Michael Brown pass near Fulham's area, enabling Gareth Barry to advance and slip in John Carew to roll in an angled shot. To double Fulham's sense of injustice Smertin had been fouled by Barry's powerful challenge only seconds before.

What is it with Villa and Mason?
