Tottenham miss out on Dutch star

last updated Friday 27th January 2006, 1:44 PM

Tottenham have missed out on signing Ajax midfielder Nigel de Jong after talks about a cut-price £1million move to White Hart Lane.

The Dutch international was out of contract in the summer, and Ajax had to face the decision to let him leave on the cheap or lose him for nothing in July.

De Jong and his agent held talks with Spurs director of football Damien Comolli on Monday.

Spurs coach Martin Jol is a big admirer of the versatile 21-year-old, who can operate at full-back or in midfield.

However after the talks with Spurs de Jong promptly signed for north German outfit Hamburg. The Dutch international, who can play both in midfield and defence, signed from Ajax on Thursday on a four-year contract.

Having made 36 Champions League appearances for Ajax, De Jong's European experience is sure to prove a vital asset next season for Hamburg, who are expected to qualify for the Champions League.
