Problem Ref for Man Utd game

last updated Thursday 17th August 2006, 1:54 PM

Referee Andre Marriner - Birmingham, West Midlands
Andre Marriner qualified as a referee in 1992 and was promoted to Football League assistant referee in 2000 and three years later he was promoted to the referees list.

Ref Marriner has only reffed one Fulham game in his short career in the top flight which was the Wigan away game last season. Chris Coleman and his squad were left shaking their heads at Marriner's efforts and will not be happy to see him again on Sunday particularly away at Man Utd where you need an experienced and tough minded man in the middle.

Referee Stats - 2005/2006

Ref Marriner blew his whistle less than his mates and when he did use it he was less likely to issue a yellow. In his seven Premiership games last season games he averaged less than 3 yellows a game. Hopefully he continues in the same vein next Sunday. In terms of red cards it is still early days but his little red card did stay in his pocket more often than the average Premiership ref.. As with red cards there is not much to go on with Ref Marriner so far as he only awarded one penalty last season.

Ref Marriner gives more fouls against home teams but seems to think that they are less card worthy than fouls by away squads. Just over 13 fouls per yellow at home and just over 7 fouls per card away from home. Hope he reviews his attitude before Sunday.

Bookings: Kavanagh (Wigan) Volz (Fulham)
Fulham went home to London angry and confused after what appeared to be some very dodgy refereeing decisions. Wigan keeper John Filan could have been sent off and there might have been a penalty - or two. Handball appeals against Leighton Baines rang out and Moritz Volz could have had a spot-kick rather than a yellow card for 'simulation' when he had been tripped by Alan Mahon. Nothing went Fulham's way and Claus Jensen said: "It is a shame to be talking about the referee. "We were quite sure that it hit his (Filan's) arm. As for the dive, he has never dived in his life. We are disappointed with the way those decisions have gone."
