Newbie Beeby to ref Aston Villa game

Richard BeebyRichard Beeby(Northamptonshire)
Richard Beeby started refereeing in Northampton and progressed through the feeder leagues before being promoted to the national list of referees in 1999. He refereed the 2004 Division Two Play-Off final between Brighton and Hove Albion and Bristol City.

Beeby has been reffing for 5 or 6 years and is now viewed to be up to officiating in a few Premiership games a season. So why not throw him into a challenging bottom of the table clash?

Barnet, and ex-Fulham, goalkeeper Ross Flitney may have a reason. When Barnet played Man Utd in their dream Carling Cup draw Beeby ruined the spectacle by sending Flitney off for handling the ball outside the area after two minutes of the game. The Bees then had to change their tactics and at least one other young lad in the Bees' squad had his chance to run out at Old Trafford cruelly snatched away.

Beeby had made a disastrously wrong decision as Flitney had not been trying "to denying a goal-scoring opportunity", there was no one near him at the time of the incident. The Bees keeper had his appeal for wrongful dismissal upheld by the Football Association and did not serve a suspension for his red card against Manchester United. A fairytale game ruined in a moment. Hopefully Beeby has a better game today.

This will be the first time Beeby has officiated at a Fulham game but of his three Premiership games two have involved Aston Villa!

Referee Stats - 2004/2005

It is hard to comment on Ref Beeby's Premiership style on the basis of two games other than to say at the moment he is keeping his cards in his pocket more than the average. At the moment the top whistler and yellow carder is Alan Riley with Steve Bennett taking the top red card and penalty man position.

Richard Beeby has reffed 3 games and issued three yellows all to visiting players.

Hopefully he will save all his cards for Villa tonight.
