Match Stats - Fulham v Arsenal 09.05.04

last updated Thursday 06th May 2004, 2:48 PM
Fulham play their last Premiership game at Loftus Road on Sunday when they welcome Champions Arsenal. The Gunners are hoping to maintain their unbeaten record this season while Fulham are still in with a chance of European football next season.
  • Arsenal are the top goalscorers in the Premierships with 70 goals and accuracy is the secret. The number of times they go for goal is creditable but is not the best in the division however they are the most accurate top level team getting 49% of efforts on target. Overall Fulham are potting goals less quickly than the Gunners, particularly in recent games, but as 5th best goal scorers in the Premiership they obviously know the way. The Cottagers don't get so many shots in as Arsenal but are still the second most accurate squad in the division. The Gunners are obviously keen to protect their unbeaten record but seem to be slowing in recent games drawing their last three away games at Pompey, Spurs and up at Toon Town and also their last home game.
  • In the middle of the park Arsenal is the one squad that likes crossing a ball less than Fulham with both squads holding 19th and 20th place in the crossing league. Presumably headed goals will be few and far between on Sunday. The North London team are one of the busiest passers in the league but in recent games The Gunners have made less than 10 passes a game more than Fulham.
  • Arsenal have conceded less goals than any other Premiership squad, nearly half of the goals that Fulham have conceded, although both squads are equal in terms of clean sheets. Suprisingly on the defensive front The Cottagers are performing better than The Gunners in recent games, letting in less goals and managing 5 clean sheets to Arsenal's 1. Fulham are maintaining their position as the top tackling team in the Premiership and in recent games have shown little sign of relaxing.
  • Either Arsenal are becoming nicer and Fulham becoming the Nasty Boys or The Gunners are taking their foot off the gas as recently their foul per game rate has reduced by 50% in comparison to earlier in the season.
Boss Coleman will be happy that the defence is working again but knows that despite apparent signs of Arsenal relaxing The Cottagers will be sorely tested on Sunday.Fulham have beaten Arsenal 5 times at home over the years but the last time was in 1966 so another draw could be on the cards.
