Match Preview - Fulham v Bolton 21.08.04

last updated Friday 20th August 2004, 3:11 PM
Fulham Manager Chris Coleman

Fulham return to their Craven Cottage home after lodging at Loftus Road for two seasons and will hope to mark the occasion with victory over Bolton.

The Cottagers started the season with a draw at Manchester City and they will have to raise their game if they are to thwart a Bolton side who were in rampant form against Charlton last weekend.

Fulham boss Chris Coleman spent the summer reshaping his squad, with Claus Jensen and Papa Bouba Diop brought in to replace Sean Davis, while Andy Cole and Tomasz Radzinski were signed to pep up the attack.

Coleman has no injury worries after the midweek internationals and is likely to stick with his tried and trusted formula, although star midfielder Steed Malbranque is still sidelined.

  • FULHAM last season achieved their best ever Premiership placing on the top division's lowest average gate of 16,240. This is their fourth successive campaign in the Premiership, where they've finished 13th, 14th and last season ninth - eclipsing their club record highest League placing of 10th in 1959/60.
  • The Cottagers came from behind to defeat an improving Bolton 2-1 in this corresponding fixture in December, to maintain their 100% home Premiership record against them (three wins out of three).
  • The Thames-side club have won three and drawn two of their last five home League matches against Bolton.
  • Collins JOHN has scored five Premiership goals for Fulham in nine appearances, and only four starts.
  • If he plays, Claus JENSEN will be facing a former club.
  • New signing Andy COLE needs a brace to total 200 English League career goals.
  • If on the field at kick off, Lee CLARK will be making his 150th start for Fulham.
  • If Moritz VOLZ is on the field at the opening whistle, he'll be making his 50th club career start.
  • Accumulated at least three points from the first two matches in each of their three Premiership seasons.
  • Gone 17 League games since losing by more than a single goal (3-1 away to Newcastle on 19 January).
    HEAD TO HEAD at Fulham

    Squad News

Fulham boss Chris Coleman spent the summer reshaping his squad, with Claus Jensen and Papa Bouba Diop brought in to replace Sean Davis, while Andy Cole and Tomasz Radzinski were signed to pep up the attack.

Collins John scored Fulham's goal last week but he will be sweating to see if he is included on Saturday as his all-round display lacked sparkle.

Luis Boa Morte has gone straight into the squad after returning from Olympic Games duty with Portugal and he will be pressing for a place in the team.

Coleman has no injury worries after the midweek internationals and is likely to stick with his tried and trusted formula, although star midfielder Steed Malbranque is still sidelined.

Fulham (from): van der Sar, Volz, Goma, Pearce, Bocanegra, Bonnissel, Knight, Djetou, Jensen, Legwinski, Diop, Boa Morte, John, McBride, Cole, Radzinski, Pembridge, McKinlay, Crossley.

  • BOLTON WANDERERS have hit the ground running. Last Saturday's "Jay-Jay Okocha Show", which produced a 4-1 win over Charlton and shot the Trotters to joint top of the table with Arsenal, evokes memories of the outset of the 2001/02 season when Sam Allardyce's charges made an immediate impact with three straight victories on their Premiership debut (5-0 Leicester a, 1-0 Middlesbrough h and 2-1 Liverpool h).
  • The Lancashire club ended last season at home to Fulham and lost their five-match winning run with a 0-2 reverse. Wanderers have their sights on a fourth consecutive maximum on the road in this, the 2,500th top flight match in their history.
  • The Trotters only maximum in seven League visits to Fulham spanning 12 years was 1-4 on 21 November 1992 in the second tier.
  • Jay Jay OKOCHA's double against Charlton were his first goals in 36 Premiership appearances.
  • If new boy Les FERDINAND scores, he'll become the first player to net for six different Premiership clubs since the inception of the League in 1992. QPR, Newcastle, Tottenham, Leicester and West Ham have all benefited from the scoring prowess of the 37 year old.
  • When Kevin POOLE next takes the field, he'll be making a 300th career League appearance.
  • Won six of the last seven Premiership matches.
  • Won the last three on the road.
  • Not lost an away top flight game since the 2-0 defeat at Middlesbrough on 3 April.
  • Failed to win any of the first four last season.
  • Won eight away Premiership games last term - only the top three managed more.

Sam Allardyce

Sam Allardyce's Bolton were superb against Charlton and they will make the trip south on a high.

Despite seeing his side destroy Charlton, Allardyce opted to make another raid on the transfer market and loan signing from Liverpool, El Hadji Diouf will look to feature at Craven Cottage.

Fulham have a good record against Bolton, being unbeaten in their last eight meetings and have never lost to The Trotters in The Premiership.

Allardyce will hope his side can buck the trend and build on their fine start to the season, with African superstar Jay-Jay Okocha likely to be a key figure for The
