Fulham officials were spending Sunday trying to convince Vitesse Arnhem and Holland midfielder Victor Sikora to snub Dutch champions Ajax and join them in a £3million deal.

And the good news for the 7,908 Cottagers fans who watched another pathetic display of finishing in Saturday's 0-0 Intertoto Cup draw with Finnish minnows FC Haka is that the 24-year-old is believed to be desperate to play in the Premiership.

Cottagers boss Jean Tigana will also have been buoyed by the news seeping out of talks that Vitesse are keen to avoid offloading one of their star players to a rival Dutch club.

Fulham's approach to Vitesse only took place 48 hours ago, but the move has progressed quickly and negotiations took place on Saturday and continued on Sunday.

Sikora has been a regular for the Eredivise side over the last three seasons, scoring 20 goals in 84 league appearances.

The Deventer-born player has also won six international caps, the last in Holland's 2-0 victory against the USA on May 16.

Assistant boss Christian Damiano confirmed on Saturday night that the club still plan to recruit another three players before the start of the Premiership season on August 17.

"We hope to do so," he said. "It depends on the recruitment market, as it is low at the moment. The championship starts in August, so it will pick up more then."
